william pickering.
- he was the first protector of the chinese. from May 1877 to 1888.
- in 1862 the detective branch was set up.
- in 1906, chinese detectives were recruited to help in investigations.
- the education problem was solved in the mid 1920s.
EDUCATION.
- they didnt think much about education until the 19th century.
how lucky..
- then in the 20th century, english and malay schools were set up and were given grants.
- cos they demand for english trained people to fill up government posts and trading companies was high.
- the english and malay schools were given more money compared to the chinese schools.
- the british thought that the chinese schools bred anti-british hwee-lings.
- so the schools weren't treated fairly :D
- they preferred to focus on the english-speaking schools to maintain loyalty among the english-speaking chinese. (the ang moh speaking chinese).
HEALTH.
- the first half of the 19th century, death rates were very high.
- in 1887, the PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT was set up to improve public health.
